1.1    WELCOMING ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN

Welcome greetings from the Chairman Prof. Dr. Kevin D. Hyde to all committee members of the Asian Mycological Committee (AMC). He expressed his thanks to all country representatives for their support in attending the meeting.
As a number of members were new, Dr Hyde gave a brief explanation of AMC and its aims/roles in promoting mycology in the region. AMC is part of IMC. However, AMC has no say in IMC matters and does not get any funds for its activities. In 2007, IMC provided USD 1 500/- to sponsor young speakers from the region for AMC 2007 (in Malaysia).

Committee members hold a four year term. The committee election will be in Korea 2011.  A number of country representatives cannot attend meeting due to lack of funds.

AMC 2009 was very successful and Chairman thanked the organizing committee headed by Dr. Wu who briefed the members. Chairman congratulated Dr Wu for the excellent meeting with more than 500 participants.

It has previously been agreed that 5% of registration fees  from AMCongress should be channeled to run AMCommittee and its activities included seed money for future conferences. Chairman asked Dr Viki and she mentioned that RM 5K as seed money had been sent to organizing committee of AMC2009. This amount will be made available to AMC2011 organisers by AMC2009 organisers and the remaining funds will be sent to AMC.

The Chairman said that there was no taker as editor of AMC newsletter.

He suggested that we consider  AMC awards,  a journal as well as activities

 1.3      MATTER ARISING

.The current AMC webpage is hosted by Mushroom Research Foundation. It will cost Thai Baht 20,000 to set up a page and yearly TB 5,000 to maintain it. There is lack of funds to maintain a webpage. Dr Viki was asked to check if more funds can be made available.

Country representatives are heads of relevant societies in respective countries. Vice-chairs to liaise with interest groups and report their activities so that members can be aware of each others mycological activities.  These can be joint activities, too.

    1.       AMC ACTIVITIES

AMCongress is AMCommittee main activity once in two years. Dr Hyde said that we should consider other activities, too.

Dr Lilian suggested that education to create awareness is not only important for future mycologists but also policy makers and to support the fight to get recognition for  mycology as an important component of science curriculum.

Dr Buchanan said that possible funding for biodiversity activities could be from International Biodiversity initiatives. The Fungal Conservation (UK) has 20 member countries. There are 5 specialist groups to represent fungi. Applications can be made for red listing as well as fungal conservation groups for Asia - Asian Fungal Conservation Committee.

Chairman said that proposals to set up subcommittees/societies will be encouraged.

    1.    ASIAN MYCOLOGICAL CONGRESS 2011 (KOREA)

This is the main activity of AMCommittee. Prof Lee said that AMC2009 had given him ideas how to organize AMC2011. He briefed that the meeting will be either in Seoul (30 min from airport) or Incheon (20min from airport). There are conference facilities at Incheon but right now no accommodations. As November will be cold, the meeting will be planned for mid- October. He agreed to provide 5% of registration fees back to AMC.

Satellite meetings can be planned during AMC2011.

    1.     BID TO HOST AMCONGRESS

Chairman said that AMCommittee will consider bids to host AMCongress. Dr Hyde suggested that guidelines and criteria to be drawn IMC model. Initial bid will be a 4-page document . After selection and full bid has to be submitted.  The bids for AMC2013 are from India , Laos and China. Dr Hyde informed the members that there were only three mycologists in Laos while China hosted AMC2002. Participants from the Asia will be able to attend as it will be cheap to have a meeting in China. Dr Sheshagiri said that India is also very keen to host AMC2013 and will make a formal bid. There is a mycological society in India and it will be affordable to mycologists from the region.

1.7     SUBCOMMITTEES/SOCIETIES

Dr Hyde said that AMC was an umbrella body and will support efforts to set-up subcommittees/ societies so that there can be specialized /focused parallel meetings during AMCongress. The subcommittees proposed/suggested were:
Endangered Fungi for Asia – to be headed by Dr. Hattori. He has been studying this aspect and was willing to gather interested members to pursue this.

Mycology Education will be headed By Dr Lilian who will pursue how this subcommittee can be formed and function.

Medicinal and Edible Fungi. Dr Viki briefed that there was a discussion with Prof ST Chang to form Asian Society of Mushroom/Mushroom Society of Asia.

Barcode Initiatives to be headed by Dr Guo Liang Dong (suggested by Chairman) and funding can be from International Initiatives
